Scientists Overwhelmed by the Complexity of the Human Brain

A scientist, Damian Pang, in an article titled “The Staggering Complexity of the Human Brain,” has attempted to explain why “our brains are the most complex structures in the known universe.”

A human brain contains 86 billion neuron cells, 85 billion other cells, and over 100 trillion connections. Research involving 500 scientists and costing hundreds of millions of dollars has tried to come up with a map of the brain’s structure. So far it has failed.

The goal was to map and then simulate the entire human brain to determine function. It turns out that the function of the brain is even more complex than its structure. The greatest mystery is how consciousness works.

An amazing fact about the brain is that each of the billions of neurons can connect to thousands of other neurons creating an additional 100 trillion connections. The brain is so powerful it can perform one quintillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) mathematical operations per second.

Naturally, secular scientists want to know how the brain evolved. One article from the German Primate Center asked “How did the large brain evolve? New insights into the development [evolution] of the human brain.” It appears that there are two specific genes that influence the development of the cerebrum, genes existing only in humans. These genes are responsible for the tremendous difference in human brains compared to those of animals.

The German Primate Center said, “The results of the study show that the two genes act in a finely tuned interplay: one ensures that the progenitor [ancestor] cells of the brain multiply more, while the other causes these cells to transform into a different type of progenitor cell — the cells that later form the nerve cells of the brain.”

A serious problem with the study is that the researchers could not compare modern human brains with two-million-year-old mammal brains. So, they had to use a modern mouse. They assumed a mouse represents our imagined ancient common ancestor which the scientists believe is the progenitor of both rats and humans.

The lack of solid evidence of actual human evolutionary ancestors has proven to be the major problem in trying to prove human evolution. The bone fragments which do exist are difficult to interpret and do explain why there is so much debate over the supposed evolutionary development of humans.

Comments: Creationist Dr. Jerry Bergman, who wrote the referenced article, says, “this evolutionary conclusion [that two specific cells helped cause the evolution of the human brain] was based largely on speculation and belief, not evidence.”

Creationists don’t have to look for any assumed pre-human ancestors of humans in order to explain how we got our wonderful brains. We have the Bible, which is much, much easier to understand than the controversial fossils that paleontologists are digging up out of the ground.

Evolutionists also must explain how the extremely complex human brain could evolve as a result of unguided natural selection and mutations. Far easier to understand is that for an omniscient God, creating a human brain with 86 billion neuron cells, 85 billion other cells, and over 100 trillion connections is no problem at all.

We know the importance of our brains, our minds. Do we use them as we should to honor our God? “Jesus said to him, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’” Matthew 22:37. “The fool says in his heart [mind], ‘There is no God.’

Love, serve and obey the Lord, the creator of our fantastic brains, and believe the good news that we are saved for eternal life in heaven through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior.
